Zenscapes is an enchanting interactive work which identifies with the theme of rapture. It incorporates a series of animations featuring origami dolls as the main characters. These animations are based on a collection of sayings which contain the word rapture and portray narratives exploring themes associated with the appreciation of life, love, art, nature and play. In keeping with their original hand-made form, the dolls remain as 2D elements which are playfully animated within several picturesque garden scenes. The animations are seen through a viewing hole on a large LCD screen which is mounted into the rear of a Japanese style garden wall.
Using fiducial tracking technology, participants are able to tangibly interact with the work by selecting one of the five origami characters on display and loading them into their corresponding garden scene to view the animations. The temporal pacing of Zenscapes incorporates elements of 'Ma' in Japanese culture which considers the space and time that exists between events equally important to the event itself. In addition to the relaxing soundtracks which accompany the work, the slow pace of the animations allows participants to take in the subtleties of the narratives and all that is happening in the moment, which contributes to the meditative qualities of the experience.
Zenscapes is a collaborative work between Kylie-Anne Schmitt and Bashkim Isai.
